The Determined Eastern Bluebird

Image
The Determined Male Bluebird By Mary J Williams © The weather has been cold Below the freezing mark We have had snow It hasn’t been a walk in the park I feed the birds But in weather like this I have to put more out Otherwise, the birds will miss I have one feeder With a Starling guard on it Chickadees, Titmouse, sparrows and more In and out the cage, they don’t quit Now a Red-bellied Woodpecker Is quite a large bird But has a long beak A long tongue I have heard I watched the woodpecker land Held on to the cage Stuck his head in The distance he did gauge He ate for a minute And then he flew away I was amazed He will eat another day I saw the male Bluebird Fighting to get in That cage held him back Little heavy I said with a grin The next time he tried He knew what to do Grabbed onto the cage And pushed himself through The female was watching From high on a roost Wondering how the male did it Without a big boost She couldn’t do it Couldn’t figure out how Male came back He did it again,...

Can't "JUST DO" Anything!

Image
I am back in the house! I was "just going to do" the watering. I don't know how to "just do" anything.  I ended up pulling out weeds and grass from around the pots along the sidewalk, then decided to move the pots, dug all the grass and weeds under and around them. Have a couple more to do but, that will be another day!  Plus, while watering, I see these things growing that aren't suppose to be there and I just have to stop and pull them out. Then you end up with a pile and I went down the drive and got the old container and lugged it up the hill and filled half of it with all that stuff. LOL!  I can't "just do", one thing.  Then, lol, I interrupted myself, while getting the shovel to dig out the grass and stuff, saw the bird seed cylinder on the workbench, so stopped and got the saw and cut it into 6 pieces. Brought the shovels and the seed up front. Took the seed in the house and to the deck and decided to get the meal worms and put them out...

The Morning Song

Image
This has been one of those days! I wrote this poem and then things changed so I wrote another. My poems usually tell a story of what is or has been going on! This is the first part of the story of April 7, 2022.  The Morning Song By Mary J Williams It’s six o’nine in the morning I am letting my dog out the door I hear this lovely song I smile and smile some more The Eastern Bluebird Is one birdsong I know Hearing that song Makes my smile grow I think to myself No meal worms are there I will put some out Hopefully Starlings will share I even put out some fruit Dried blueberries in the dish Hope Starlings don’t throw them out That is my only wish I wouldn’t mind so much if they ate them But if Starlings come along They throw the fruit on the deck floor That’s just not right, it’s wrong Another bird that may be around The Baltimore Oriole dressed in orange and black It sure would be nice to see them Can’t wait till they come back They come to my feeders too The grape jelly is al...

I Think I Love Birds!

Image
I have another poem this morning. It came to me as I am out in the rain putting the bird seed back out. Bringing it in every night so the other critters won't eat it all up! There that's just about the whole story of the poem. Hope you enjoy!  It doesn't show up, but there is a watermark behind the poem so I will post the picture I used here for you. The Bluebird of Happiness! I Think I Love the Birds By Mary J Williams © How do you know The birds are your thing Is it just because You like the way they sing Is it a color That you like best Or is it because You feel blessed Is it because Looking out the window pane Taking picture after picture Until the battery drains Is it because You spend tons of cash Putting seed out And cleaning up the trash Is it because A birdbath was bought Cleaning it daily So, disease can’t be caught Is it because You bring in the seed So, the other critters Don’t get to feed Is it because The seed goes back out Even though the rain Makes me wet,...

Robins and Bluebirds

Image
I love to feed the birds, but the European Starlings get on my nerves. They swarm in and eat all the food from the feeders I have on my deck. Of course, they bathe in the birdbath as I stated in the previous blog, which leaves another mess that I have to clean up!  On the 18th of January, I decided to put out some meal worms for the Eastern Bluebirds. I am giving you the proper names to the birds, so you know exactly what they are.  The bluebirds flew in and located the meal worms. I had four that came. One was a female the rest were male. I was watching from my kitchen window. The blasted starlings flew in and the bluebirds left. I wasn't having none of that. By this time I had taken a picture from the kitchen window and had camera in hand.  I went to the back door opened it up and opened the storm door about 8 inches.  The starlings flew off!  I waited a couple of minutes and one of the bluebirds came back. Then another showed up. I was still standing th...
