Gardening, New Shed and Mice

Image
Gardening has begun! I don't have a large garden, but my flower beds will be holding both flowers and veggies.  Just because I can, I cut the end off the large bunch of celery. That end went directly into a flower pot outside. Since I planted it we have had below freezing temperatures. I figured if it was going to make it would, if not, I would try again! It is still growing strong.  I also cut a potato that had sprouts. Put the cut pieces in a 1/2 whiskey barrel I used last year for flowers and peppers. I have two potato plants growing. Today was the day of cleaning up after my son and granddaughter built a shed for us.  I have decided I need a shelf to put the flower pots on. I can't wait to tell you what happened.  I was cleaning the top of the table I had put my flower pots on, for the winter. I covered them up with a large container with rope handles.  I lifted up the top and little mice went running everywhere. I laughed. There were several pots, one...

The Forgotten One

Image
This is the second part of the story of April 7, 2022. I involves another at the little feeder dishes, that, for some reason, I forgot all about! The Forgotten One By Mary J Williams © I just put out some food In the little dishes For the Eastern Bluebirds That was what my wish is In the kitchen now The poem is done “The Morning Song” A story that was spun I was worried about the Starlings And the Sparrow too Knowing how greedy they are Eat everything till it’s through I forgot about one thing A critter that comes around Four legs and a long tail And is quite the clown I looked out my kitchen window And there standing on two feet Hauling in the meal worms He didn’t miss a beat I whispered the word “Squirrel” And Lacy sped to the door The squirrel took off Down the deck he tore Lacy went running after it But lost him on the way I tried pointing another out But she didn’t see it this day The squirrel is gone for a little while I hope the Bluebirds come in I would really hope they ge...

The Morning Song

Image
This has been one of those days! I wrote this poem and then things changed so I wrote another. My poems usually tell a story of what is or has been going on! This is the first part of the story of April 7, 2022.  The Morning Song By Mary J Williams It’s six o’nine in the morning I am letting my dog out the door I hear this lovely song I smile and smile some more The Eastern Bluebird Is one birdsong I know Hearing that song Makes my smile grow I think to myself No meal worms are there I will put some out Hopefully Starlings will share I even put out some fruit Dried blueberries in the dish Hope Starlings don’t throw them out That is my only wish I wouldn’t mind so much if they ate them But if Starlings come along They throw the fruit on the deck floor That’s just not right, it’s wrong Another bird that may be around The Baltimore Oriole dressed in orange and black It sure would be nice to see them Can’t wait till they come back They come to my feeders too The grape jelly is al...

One Hour and I am Done!

Image
One Hour By Mary J Williams © I went out to weed Picking up sticks along the way Digging up wild onions I think it’s time to play There are tons of honeysuckle That needs to be removed A couple of branches trimmed On the Redbud, to improve My mind thinks I can do it The body not so much Only an hour of bending And I think I need a crutch I still have to empty the bag Which means a walk downhill I am just praying I make it And I don’t have a spill After the bag is emptied Back up the hill I go Still want to put out birdseed I will just do it slow Bird seed is out Gardening shoes removed One hour is all I can do This day, that was proved   Front side by driveway- Yes, I use leaves as mulch down to the driveway

House Finch and Safflower Seed

Image
Safflower Seed By Mary J Williams I make the House Finch happy Safflower is the seed they prefer I just filled up the feeder I believe I do concur Already on the feeder I see the male out there I don’t see the female now But he is certainly getting his share Sometimes the Cardinals Stop by the feeder to feed Push the Finch aside So, they can get some seed Sometimes both will eat They are learning to share No other birds will interrupt At least they don’t dare This is one food That I do provide Those pesky Starlings Cannot abide!

Turkey Vulture

Image
The Turkey Vulture By Mary J Williams  © They are not my favorite bird But soar high above my head I see them flying high Looking for something dead These birds even have a smell For over a mile away You should be glad they do They keep nasty bugs at bay Vultures are even protected From all the hunters out there For research, special permits required Doesn’t happen often, I swear! Now you know about the Turkey Vulture Flying in the sky Catching the thermals Floating way up high. When it had been raining To a pole they came near me Spreading the wings to dry I grabbed my camera, as I could see Pictures of drying the wings They were all flared out I was thrilled to get the pictures Doesn’t happen often, I have no doubt!     March 30, 2022  11:34 A.M.

Just One More Day

Image
Just One Day By Mary J Williams © Yesterday, driving around I looked in the many yards I didn’t see one flower And that, sure was hard One day later Driving down the street Flowers were everywhere To everyone they did greet Just one day, just One day Now blooms are on a tree Just one day is what it was Before, I wasn’t patient, you see Today, as I was driving All the flowers in bloom Forsythia was too Guess it’s the sun, I assume It’s only the low fifties And the wind is blowing hard Yet those flowers all popped out In everybody’s yard Yes, even in my own Where there were none yesterday I have Hyacinth and Anemone And the Daffodils are out to play I feel better now Not so awfully blue I should have had more patience Just one more day would do!
